The Five Insights of Enduring Leaders

You could have remarkable Perspective. You may have Passion and Timing down cold or you may feel like you are well practiced in the other four insights. Yet without Connection, you won’t be nearly as effective. Connection is the attractive influence that makes enduring leaders approachable, accessible and credible with their employees, their customers, and their business partners. It quite literally is what makes a leader “attractive” as a leader, even if they are hard-nosed, demanding and results-oriented. In fact, Connection, it has been proven, is the most important insight a leader needs to have.

Developing Connection involves a combination of looking inward and working outward. Connection involves practicing self-awareness, which helps leaders better understand and control their own behaviors. Practicing Connection also involves learning the discipline of personal mastery, which helps leaders consciously apply their awareness to how they interact with the world. Self-awareness isn’t practiced in a vacuum; it requires interacting with the world and noticing what happens inside of us when we do. Once we notice, our personal mastery disciplines help us determine how to change or modify our behaviors so they are tailored to the situation.

Nothing attracts people like genuine openness and inquisitiveness, especially if it is motivated by caring. And caring about people, including ourselves, is at the heart of Connection.
